The basic issue is that the holiday is pagan in root and I don't like that the whole premise of Halloween is dark and we, as believers, are to represent the light, His light. We are not to fraternize with anything dark or evil. There is much more to say on the matter and much to consider, it is not simple for me.
But, in an effort to not strip our children of what could be fun about holidays we decided to carve some pumpkins with some friends, attend a fall festival with Grammy and then take the big boys to a movie after hitting up a friends Chili Cook-off. They dressed up, because they do that all the time, and we gave them a bag of candy and headed off to the movie theater.
I was a little disappointed that the only movies available for kids were Halloween movies. I was hoping for something neutral. But, none-the-less we had to chose. They had a great time, never once complained they didn't get to trick or treat, and enjoyed every minute.
My sweet boys...the did good not doing the traditional Halloween thing and for that I'm proud. As for next year...I'm not sure what will happen. There is still much to be decided.
